Smirnoff Ice – lighter by design

Lighter can be better. In Venezuela, improving the design of our Smirnoff Ice bottles is saving 1,600 tonnes of packaging a year.

Smirnoff Ice is one of the world’s leading pre-mixed vodka drinks – and it is helping us meet our ambition to reduce the amount of packaging we use by 10%. Since November 2012, our brand designers in Venezuela have worked with suppliers and local regulators to reduce the amount of glass used in each individual bottle of Smirnoff Ice. By changing the shape while keeping the bottle's design safety and quality intact, we have reduced the weight of each bottle by 35g – a saving of 17%. And because Smirnoff Ice is so popular – last year we sold 45 million bottles in Venezuela – those savings stack up. We are on track to eliminate 1,600 tonnes of Smirnoff Ice packaging per year.

Cutting the weight of packaging has many benefits. While it saves on materials and the energy it takes to make them, it also reduces the carbon emissions associated with transporting and distributing our products. We estimate that our changes to Smirnoff Ice bottles alone will save 1,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, equivalent to removing 1,000 cars from the roads.
