Celebrating life, today and tomorrow
“As I start as chief executive of Diageo, I know that the ability to shape the future – for our company and our stakeholders – is in our own hands. The work we do in sustainability and responsibility today, working in harmony with our communities, suppliers, customers, consumers, and other partners, as well as the natural world around us, will help make that future a bright one. We call this celebrating life, today and tomorrow.”
Ivan Menezes, Chief Executive
Sourcing the materials we need
From the farmers who grow our raw materials, to the businesses who make our packaging, we want to work in partnership with our suppliers so that the materials we use are made in ways that contribute positively to local communities and the natural environment. By working with suppliers through associations like AIM-PROGRESS and SEDEX, we aim to improve practices in our supply chain and the wider industry.
Our barley development programme in Ethiopia involving over 750 smallholder farmers has the potential to improve the lives of thousands while securing a sustainable supply of barley for our breweries.
Making our brands sustainably
The quality of our brands relies on a broad range of natural resources – from the lakes and rivers which give us water, to the ecosystems in which our ingredients are grown. To protect them, we have targets for safeguarding water resources, halving our carbon footprint, eliminating waste to landfill, and creating more sustainable packaging.
We’ve reduced overall water use by nearly one million cubic metres despite growing the business, while our operations in water-stressed parts of Africa improved water efficiency by over 30% – two years ahead of schedule.
Marketing and selling
our brands responsibly
Our much-loved brands are enjoyed by millions every day, and we’re committed to ensuring they are enjoyed responsibly. We work with others to encourage adults to make responsible choices about whether, when and how much to drink. Building on our work, we have joined with 12 other leading global producers of beer, wine, and spirits in making a set of commitments to reduce alcohol misuse over the next five years.
We support more than 300 responsible drinking initiatives in more than 40 countries to tackle underage drinking, drink driving, and binge drinking.
Including our communities
in our success
Our business is most successful when we operate in thriving communities. Creating jobs, paying taxes, investing in skills development and empowerment, providing access to clean water, and helping when disaster strikes are some of the ways we contribute, beyond creating great brands that consumers love. To ensure that what we do is genuinely in the interests of our communities, we aim to engage stakeholders so that we understand and address local issues.
We have pledged £6.4 million to empower 2 million women in 17 countries in Asia Pacific by 2017.
Living our values
in everything we do
People want to trust the company behind the brands that they love. To earn this trust, and stay proud of what we do, we are committed to creating a culture underpinned by a strong set of values, respecting diversity, promoting safety and human rights, and acting with integrity.
In response to a new question in our annual Values Survey, 84% of employees said they would feel comfortable raising any concerns about compliance or ethics.
Building a sustainable
business as we grow
“I am honoured to lead a company with such strong values. Building the trust of our stakeholders is important to me personally, and I will make it my priority to ensure that, as Diageo continues to grow, our commitment to and performance in sustainability and responsibility grow with us.”
